Successful closure of a tracheocutaneous fistula after tracheostomy using two skin flaps: a case report
A tracheocutaneous fistula may develop when a tracheostomy orifice epithelializes during a prolonged course of healing or undernutrition. Various techniques for closing such fistulae have been reported. However, a standard procedure has not yet been established. We, herein, present a case involving a 35-year-old woman who developed a tracheocutaneous fistula after tracheostomy. We closed the fi...
متن کاملTracheocutaneous Fistula Closure with Turnover Flap and Polydioxanone Plate
An alternative surgical treatment is proposed for closure of tracheocutaneous fistulas. The authors present a new technique for reconstruction of persistent tracheocutaneous fistula resultant from temporary tracheostomy. The single-stage closure under local anesthesia involves a fistulous tract turnover flap with a perforated 0.15 mm polydioxanone plate between the flap and the subcutaneous clo...
متن کاملShort Communication Closure of large tracheocutaneous stula using turn-over hinge ap and V-Y advancement ap
Tracheocutaneous stula is a frequent sequel of long-term tracheostomy or tracheal fenestration. Closure of stula is complicated by the presence of extensive scar tissue, mucopurulent secretions, and tension from insufcient advancement of adjacent soft tissue. We report two successfully closed cases of large tracheocutaneous stulae using a hinge ap and a V-Y advancement ap.
متن کاملTracheocutaneous fistula closure in the pediatric population: should secondary closure be the standard of care?
OBJECTIVE Tracheocutaneous fistula (TCF) closure is achieved by excision followed either by primary closure or healing by secondary intention. Although primary closure provides immediate resolution of the fistula, it is associated with more severe potential complications. Healing by secondary intention minimizes these potential complications; however, it is inconvenient for the patient and may ...
متن کاملClosure of a pharyngocutaneous fistula using a sternomastoid muscle flap.
Presented here is a case of a pharyngocutaneous fistula which was closed primarily using a sternomastoid muscle flap, without skin coverage, thus obviating the need for a three-layered closure. Providing an intermediate cover was sufficient for the closure because the mucosal lining on the inside and the cutaneous covering on the outside grew using the muscle for support.
